By Luigi Pirandello
adaptation by Robert Brustein
Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French
For its first production in the new AVC Performing Arts Theatre, the Theatre Arts Department has chosen Robert Brustein’s updated version of the 20th century Nobel Prize-winning play, Six Characters in Search of an Author. Pirandello’s masterpiece opens with a group of actors rehearsing their next show. They are interrupted by six strangers claiming to be fictitious creations of a careless author, who nonetheless insist that they are real.
This classic work examines the difficulty of distinguishing between reality and illusion and the constantly changing nature of personal identity. The Characters are trapped inside a traumatic event from which they long to escape. This can only be brought about if the story is played out to a conclusion. It falls to the actors to abandon their original play and help the Characters by finishing the troubled family story, and by revealing the guilty secrets of the Characters. As the actors and Characters interact they engage in spiraling arguments about the nature of truth and reality. For the actors and the audience it becomes an examination of how life is like theatre and theatre is like life.
Contains adult language and situations.
