Rapidly rising enrollment during the past decade has created major difficulties for staff and students to locate parking spaces during peak class times. In recent years students have been forced to park off campus on nearby residential streets and then cross busy streets such as Avenue K and 30th Street West. With a continuous rise in enrollment forecasted, it became obvious that additional parking was needed. Per the Facilities Master Plan, the North Parking Lot project was designed and completed in August 2006. The project provides an additional 1,003 parking spaces for both students and staff. Significant safety improvements resulted from the project including parking lot lighting, pedestrian walkway lighting, well lit parking permit dispensers, ADA accessible parking and walkways and an emergency phone system. The emergency phone system is the first one of its kind in the Antelope Valley. Easily visible blue emergency phone stations strategically placed throughout the parking lot provide immediate communications with the campus safety and security office. As future parking lots on campus are constructed or renovated the emergency phone system will be implemented campus wide. The North Parking Lot project also provides the access and parking required for other important projects including the Sheriff's Training Academy at Antelope Valley College, Respiratory Therapy Program, Agricultural Labs project, Faculty Office Building and the Facilities Services and Receiving Building.
