Mediator training program starts in September

A mediator training program to prepare people to work in a variety of business, community and legal situations will be held through Antelope Valley College’s Corporate and Community Services Office beginning Sept. 12.

The series of five courses starts with “Introduction to Mediation.” That will be followed on consecutive Saturdays by “Mediation as a Second Career,” “Mediation and Violence Prevention,” “Mediation Skills Training,” and “Special Topics in Mediation.”

Those completing the 40-hour program will be awarded a Mediator Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to offer their skills as mediators in a variety of situations, according to instructor Linda Hughes.

Also, people may choose to enroll in any of the courses, though the certificate is only awarded to those completing all five courses.

Hughes has almost two decades experience as a mediator and trainer in Southern California. She has a master’s degree in conflict management and a law degree.

“It is my hope that many more people will soon know about mediation, a more effective, timely and cost-efficient means of problem solving,” Hughes said.

For course information contact Hughes at lahughes48@aol.com or www.lahughes.com. Students may register online at www.adultedreg.com/avc or contact the Corporate and Community Services Office at, (661) 722-6300, ext. 6584.
