Antelope Valley College auditions this weekend for “Judas Iscariot”

Antelope Valley College’s Theatre Arts Department will be holding auditions for The Last Days of Judas Iscariot on Saturday, June 6 from 2pm-5pm, and Sunday, June 7 from 12pm-2pm in the AVC Black Box Theater.  Performances of the play are planned for November/December 2009.

Actors are asked to present a monologue of no more than two minutes and to come prepared to read from portions of the script.  Directing the production will be Mark Branner.  Multiple roles are available for both men and women of all ages.

Set in a time-bending, darkly comic corner of Purgatory called Hope, playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis takes a close look at the eternal damnation of the Bible’s most notorious sinner with a philosophical reexamination of the conflict between divine mercy and human free will. Employing dialogue couched in contemporary hip-hop street talk, the play asks the question:  If God is all-forgiving then why is Judas condemned to an eternity in Hell for his betrayal of Jesus Christ and his subsequent suicide?
