Original One-Act Play Festival set for May 6-9

Antelope Valley College’s 14th Original One-Act Play Festival will be held in the campus Black Box Theatre FA2, 3041 W. Ave. K, Lancaster at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 6 through Friday May 8, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 9.

The Original One-Act Play Festival provides for the development of new theatrical voices, as student playwrights experience the transformation from written word to live performance in these world premieres.

Five plays have been chosen for this year’s festival: “The Preparations and A Planet Scorned” by David Ritterband, “Guilty” by Laurie Smith, “Epiphany at the Comic Book Store” by Kira Dounias, and “La Llorona” by Juan Arredondo.

In “The Preparations,” three rather inept, but essentially fun-loving, characters frantically search for a missing item as they prepare for their "big moment" of the evening.

In “A Planet Scorned,” an angry (ex)planet mourns his loss of status and plots his revenge. “Guilty” explores whether crimes of the heart can lead to guilt.

“Epiphany at the Comic Book Store” celebrates a day of realizations at a small café: a geek discusses his epiphany while his server has one of her own.

“La Llorona” (Weeping Woman) is a tragedy of obsession for a woman trying to keep a man and her wits.

Virginia Pedersen directs “The Preparations,” David Negaard directs “A Planet Scorned,” Nancy Bluto directs “Guilty,” Jessica Hassan directs “Epiphany at the Comic Book Store,” and AVC Theatre Arts instructor Hollace Starr directs “La Llorona.”

All tickets are $5. The plays contain adult themes and language and are not suitable for children. Reservations may be made at (661) 722-6300, ext. 6728. For more information contact playwriting instructor Eugenie Trow at, or (661) 722-6300, ext. 6425.
