Jazz bands to perform at festival 7 p.m. Feb. 27

Professional jazz musicians will provide a clinic for aspiring high school and college performers when Antelope Valley College sponsors a jazz clinic and festival Saturday, Feb. 27 at Paraclete High School, 42145 30th St. West, Lancaster.

The public is invited to attend a 7 p.m. performance of the students and professionals in the Paraclete Gymnasium. Donations will be accepted at the door to support the Antelope Valley Jazz Ensemble.

Professionals will provide instruction to students earlier in the day. Clinicians include bass player John B. Williams, who performed with jazz greats Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Louis Armstrong, and drummer Dick Weller, who has played with Mike Stern, Bobby Shew and Scott Henderson.

Other professionals slated to attend include Justo Almario, saxophone; Joe Bagg, piano; Jon Papenbrook, trumpet; and Andrew Liptman, trombone.

College jazz band director Lee Matalon organized the event as a way to inspire interest in jazz and enable students to learn from professional musicians.

The evening performance will feature performances by area jazz bands including groups from Quartz Hill, Littlerock and Paraclete high schools, Joe Walker Middle School, and Antelope Valley College.
