Antelope Valley College and the Antelope Valley College Foundation have announced six recipients of the 2010 Achievement Awards who will be honored at the college’s 80th Anniversary Gala, Saturday, April 17 at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.

The honorees include AVC alumnus California State Sen. Dave Cox, Ron and Yvette Emard, Lew Stults, Alis Clausen Odenthal and Nancy Jo Hatfield.

The gala will be held at the Poppy Pavilion, 2551 W. Ave. H, Lancaster, beginning at 5:30 p.m. for cocktails and dinner at 6:30 p.m. For information on sponsorships or reservations call the AVC Advancement and Foundation Office, (661) 722-6300, ext. 6391.

Cox graduated from AVC in 1957. He went on to serve in various elected offices leading up to his current post as State Senator for California’s 1st District, which encompasses all or part of Sacramento and 11 other counties. Now in his second term in the Senate, Cox is vice-chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Local Government Committee, and serves on four other Senate committees including budget.

Prior to his Senate seat, Cox served in the state Assembly where he was Assembly Republican Leader 2001-2004.

Ron and Yvette Emard have been chosen to receive the Community Service Award based on their extensive philanthropic efforts, primarily benefiting the children of the Antelope Valley. Ron Emard, general managing partner of Robertson Palmdale Honda and dealer/principal partner of the Harley Davidson dealership in Lancaster, is founder of The Kids Charities of the Antelope Valley. Thunder on the Lot, an annual motorcycle and car show fund raising event that Emard founded, has raised more than $2 million to benefit local children. In addition, he’s involved in numerous community organizations.

Ron’s wife, Yvette, has been actively involved in charitable events, as well, including cofounder of the annual music festival, GraceFest AV, which supports local school scholarships.

She works as advertising and marketing manager for Robertson Palmdale Honda.

Lew Stults, a 53-year resident of the Antelope Valley, will receive the Public Service Award. As district director for Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon, Stults serves as a liaison to residents in an area that stretches from the Antelope Valley to Victor Valley and Inyo and Mono counties.

Stults himself has served in elected office as a member of the Lancaster School District Board of Trustees. In addition, he is founding president of the Lancaster Education Foundation, past president of the Antelope Valley Board of Trade and member of Lancaster West Rotary Club.

Alis Clausen Odenthal will be honored with the Professional Achievement Award. She is currently manager of public involvement for Southern California Edison’s Transmission and Substation siting efforts. Prior to that she was the utility company’s region manager for public affairs in the Antelope Valley and Kern County from 1996-2007.

Odenthal’s involvement has included serving as a director on the Antelope Valley Board of Trade and worked on the board’s Aerospace Committee, which successfully lobbied aerospace firms and the Department of Defense for a greater share of the multi-billion dollar Joint Strike Fighter program for California-based firms.

Nancy Jo Hatfield has been chosen for the College Service Award, based on her many years as a volunteer as well as an employee of the college. Hatfield’s 20-year association with the college began as a volunteer at the game table for men’s and women’s basketball games at AVC. She later volunteered to provide ongoing support to the women’s volleyball team and football team.

In 2001 -- four years after being hired as an administrative assistant to the vice president of student services at AVC – Hatfield was presented the Bill Montamble Award for outstanding service by her colleagues. She continues to provide support for AVC Marauder Athletics.
