Break out the lederhosen for Oktober Kirmes-Fest at AVC

German food, entertainment and games will be part of Antelope Valley College’s Oktober Kirmes-Fest celebration 4-8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23 in the campus Cafeteria, 3041 W. Ave. K, Lancaster.

The event is being held as a fund-raiser for the AVC Tutor Osher Scholarship Fund. For every dollar raised at the event, there will be a 50-cent match for the scholarship through the Osher Foundation, according to organizer Dorothy Williams with the college’s Learning Center.

Kirmes-Fest is traditionally a German celebration after the harvest when the work is done, according to Williams. In the college’s case, the event will come on the heels of the college’s accreditation visit and an extensive self study process.

Those attending the event are encouraged to wear lederhosen, alpine hats or similar attire associated with German festivities. There will be a yodeling contest and men will have the opportunity to participate in a sexy knees contest.

Also, there will be live entertainment, singing and dancing.

Food, including bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, apple strudel and root beer, will be provided. Beer will be sold separately.

Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for students, and $9 for children from 6 to 12. Children 5 and under are free.

Advance tickets can be purchased on the Lancaster campus through the Learning Center, the Marauder Bookstore, or the Advancement and Foundation Office.
