Intravenous therapy, phlebotomy courses offered at AVC

Licensed vocational nurses (LVN), registered nurses and physician assistants can obtain intravenous therapy certification though a course offered by Antelope Valley College Corporate and Community Services beginning Aug. 26.

The class will meet 5-9 p.m., Aug. 26 and Sept. 9, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Aug. 27 and Sept. 10. Types of venipuncture devices, psychological preparation, and venipuncture and technique are among the topics to be covered.

In addition, a phlebotomy course for LVNs, RNs, physician assistants, medical assistants and paramedics will be offered 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Oct. 1. Instructor Patricia Karnstedt will provide three hours of phlebotomy theory followed by each participant demonstrating three successful finger punctures and three successful vein accesses for blood draw.

The phlebotomy course provides LVNs with six units of continuing education course credit and certification through the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
