Debate students take awards

AVC debate students competing in their first intercollegiate debate tournament earned top honors at the Tina J. Herman Policy Invitational held last week at Los Angeles City College.

"All participants showcased their natural ability and hard work and accomplished a remarkable feat -- our team swept the top two individual and top two team awards," said advisor and debate instructor Kenneth Lee.

Of the top five individual speakers awards in the tournament, AVC's Bradley Crawford earned fifth speaker honors, Luis Cacho earned second speaker honors, and William Nipper was named the tournament’s top individual speaker.

In the team award category two of the three undefeated teams were from AVC.  Taking second place team honors was the team of Kimberly Layton and Regina Alesso.  Earning the Top Team honors for the tournament were William Nipper and Luis Cacho.

Other participants from the Antelope Valley College Debate Union included Marie Aguirre, Kyle Lemen, Jennifer Sandoval, Michael Devin, Brooks Berlanga, Bryan Herrera, Peter Doty, Barret Howle, Joseph Rankin and Marcial DelValle.
