Eat ice cream, repair a kiln

An ice cream social featuring ceramic bowls crafted by Rich Sim will be held in the Antelope Valley College Art Gallery 5-7 p.m. March 16 as a fundraiser to repair kilns in the campus ceramics lab. The gallery is located on the south side of campus, 3041 W. Ave. K.

Sim, an art professor at the college since 1967, created the event based on a similar successful effort to support art students in 2009. Now, AVC has four kilns in need of repair, but there are no district funds to cover the estimated $9,700 cost.

Community members are invited to attend the event where they can have ice cream served in a bowl created by Sim. Donors can eat ice cream and keep the bowl.

In addition, there will be vases and dinnerware available for purchase.

“We’ll have $3,500 worth of pots,” said Sim.

Sim reports he already has enough money to repair one kiln but is hoping to collect more funds to finish the task.
