AVC officials respond to $140,000 donation by First Solar Inc.

Antelope Valley Colleges officials said Thursday that a $140,000 donation by First Solar Inc. will help students to fulfill their dreams through a college education.

The gift was announced during the college’s annual Scholarship Convocation, where scores of students and donors were gathered for the presentation of nearly $150,000 in scholarship awards from 79 different donors.

“This is one example of the relationship between the college and the business community working together to support our students,” AVC President Dr. Jackie L. Fisher Sr. said of First Solar’s donation.

The gift will be used to create an endowment, that when combined with a match by the Osher Foundation, will provide at least 10 $1,000 annual scholarships in perpetuity, plus some additional one-time scholarships in 2013, according to Bridget Razo, AVC’s executive director of advancement and foundation.

“I am thrilled and grateful for First Solar’s generous contribution. It is an investment in our students and it is an investment in our Antelope Valley community,” Razo said. “We look forward to a strong and continued relationship with them.”

First Solar has asked that residents of the Antelope Valley communities of Antelope Acres, Fairmont, Neenach and Oso be given priority for the scholarships, based on need.
