Info meetings slated for summer firefighting program

Men and women interested in enrolling in Antelope Valley College’s summer Wildland Firefighter Academy are invited to attend one of several informational meetings scheduled over the next few weeks.

The 240-hour program, which starts June 10, combines classroom instruction with outdoor skills classes to prepare students for work as wildland firefighters. Graduates of the program have gone on to serve with the U.S. Forest Service and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Prospective students are required to attend one of the orientations, complete an application and medical exam. Also, students must pass a Work Capacity Test (pack test).

The orientation sessions will be in building TE2-120 of the Lancaster campus, 3041 W. Ave. K at:

  • 5 p.m. March 26
  • 5 p.m. April 9
  • 5 p.m. April 17
  • 5 p.m. April 23
  • 10 a.m. April 27

Candidates for the program must be a high school graduate or have completed the general educational development (GED), and be age 18 on or before July 20, 2013.
