AVC students succeed at Peace Tournament

AVC debate students competing in their first intercollegiate debate tournament earned top honors at the 2013 True Boardman Peace Tournament held at Los Angeles City College over the weekend.

AVC debate students distinguished themselves by winning their head-to-head debates with teams from Southwestern College, Los Angeles City College and Santa Monica College, according to advisor and instructor Kenneth Lee.

Lee said the wins were all the more impressive for AVC students considering their competition had been debating all year.

“All participants worked really hard -- practicing during their spare time guaranteeing success," said Lee.

Taking the second place team honors in the upper division of debate at the annual tournament were Aaron Green and Anna Delrosario in policy debate.

Other participants from Antelope Valley College included Scott Bowman, Mike Valdez, Paola Lara, Brenna Steinwachs and Maria Perdue.  All members of the team are from this spring semester’s Communication Studies 115 class, “Introduction to Argumentation and Debate.”

Instructor William Buchynski provided judging for the team.
