Antelope Valley College to Serve More Students by Changing Service Hours

Posted: January 14, 2014

Recognizing the need to provide greater access to support  services for many of its students, Antelope Valley College president Ed Knudson announced today the college will change its service hours effective February 3, the beginning of the spring semester.

Knudson said the new general service hours will extend from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday. After 11:30 on Friday morning, the college will shift to a weekend schedule. The new hours will remain in effect for the entire year, including the January intersession and the summer session. Some services, such as the library and the learning center, will be open even later.

Knudson stated that thousands of students attend classes Monday through Thursday evenings, but because under the existing services schedule, offices such as admissions and records, financial aid, counseling and others close at 5:00 p.m.

“Approximately one-third of our enrollment—between 3,000 and 5,000 students—occurs after 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday,” Knudson said. “Right now, many of these students never get to talk to a live person.”

Knudson went on to say that in addition to the student need, nearly 300 adjunct faculty—part-time instructors—along with regular faculty, teach in the evening. They also need direct contact with administrative staff for support.

The earlier start time in the morning also provides an opportunity for current and prospective students to access services before their own work days begin, Knudson said.

The revised schedule affects the following service areas:

Open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.:

  • Admissions and Records
  • Financial Aid
  • Counseling
  • Student Life and Development
  • Office for Students with Disabilities
  • Outreach
  • Food Services
  • Bookstore
  • Executive Offices
  • Human Resources
  • Business Services

Open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.:

  • Library
  • Learning Center

Special Hours:

  • Subway—open until 9:00
  • Bookstore—special hours during first two weeks of the semester

In addition, Knudson said the library is renewing service on Saturdays, with hours from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Knudson stated that the shift to the weekend schedule at mid-day on Friday will also help the college save money. Weekend classes will be consolidated into three buildings, allowing the campus to shut down utilities in buildings that are not used.

“And our maintenance and technology crews will be able to conduct service and maintenance work when the traffic on campus is at its lowest,” Knudson said. “This means fewer disruptions to work and services when students are present.”

Knudson emphasized that the change in service hours reflects the reality that Antelope Valley College exists to serve the community.

“Providing the opportunity for direct contact not only ensures students get the help they need, it lets them know this is their college, too,” Knudson said.
