" Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse" performs at Antelope Valley College
Antelope Valley College’s Theatre Arts Department will present Kevin Henkes’ irrepressible mouse heroine in “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” on Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m. in the AVC Black Box Theater, 3041 W. Ave. K, Lancaster.
“Lilly” began touring to local elementary schools March 7, and will continue a three-month tour that the college offers as part of its Theatre for Young Audiences program. The tour will visit schools as far away as Mojave, California City, Boron and Edwards.
Sponsored in part by a grant from the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and the AVC Associated Student Organization, “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” will eventually play to nearly 7,000 elementary school children.
The Theatre for Young Audiences program is “one of the most successful and visible examples of our desire to engage our local community with theater of the highest quality,” said AVC theatre arts producer Jonet Leighton.
Adapted from the Kevin Henkes’ books “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse,” “Julius,” “Baby of the World,” and “ Chester’s Way,” Kevin Kling’s stage play revolves around Lilly, who proudly proclaims that she is Queen! And she loves everything! As she skips through her adventures in her red cowboy boots, ever ready with her squirt gun (“Just in case!”), Lilly explores what it’s like to make friends, have a new baby brother, and how to deal with the discovery that even drama queens can’t always be the center of attention.
All tickets for these public performances are $5. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Theatre Arts Department’s Ticket Hotline at (661) 722-6300, ext. 6728. Any remaining tickets may also be purchased immediately before each show at the box office.
