Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s High Desert campuses partner with Antelope Valley College
The High Desert campuses of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide have signed an articulation agreement with Antelope Valley College (AVC) that will allow AVC students with an associate’s degree to transfer into a Bachelor of Science degree program in Professional Aeronautics or Technical Management at the Embry-Riddle High Desert campuses.
AVC students completing Associate in Science degree programs in business administration or aeronautics and aviation technology will be able to make a smooth transition to complete a four-year degree at Embry-Riddle, which now offers programs in the Antelope Valley.
“This is another example of how we’re working to provide other higher education opportunities for our students to be successful and to move into the work force,” said AVC President Dr. Jackie L. Fisher Sr.
The articulation agreement was signed by Dr. James Cunningham, Assistant Provost, for Embry-Riddle, and AVC deans Maggie Drake and Dr. Stanley Viltz. AVC’s main campus is located in Lancaster, with an additional site in Palmdale.
Those who have earned the hands-on Aeronautical and Aviation Technology degree through AVC while learning to maintain and repair aircraft can pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to have a pathway to a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical studies,” said Maggie Drake, dean of Technical Education Division at AVC. “Embry-Riddle is a valued institution of higher education to the aerospace industry.”
The program can help those with technical expertise to move into a management role.
“This is a pathway that is helping technician-level people. People not intending to transfer (to a university) now have a pathway to a prestigious university degree,” Drake said.
AVC’s program, which is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), prepares students for the Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license exams to become certified aircraft technicians.
AVC students earning an Associate in Science degree in Business Administration are eligible to enter Embry-Riddle’s Bachelor of Science in Technical Management program.
Dr. Stanley Viltz, dean of the Business, Computers and Economic Development Division, hailed the program as a plus for business students who can attain skills sets specific for working in the local aerospace industry.
“Up here in the valley, where are the jobs? They’re at Edwards Air Force Base, they’re at Lockheed and those aerospace-type of installations. This is another attempt to keep those 62,000 commuters from going down below,” Viltz said.
The degree program in technical management will prepare those with a technical background for management or supervisory positions. Students can choose an area of specialization to include logistics and occupational safety and health.
“The Embry-Riddle High Desert campuses are very excited about this new relationship with Antelope Valley College,” said Darlene Lee, director of academic support for Embry-Riddle High Desert. “We are proud to help these students continue their undergraduate education with us in the technical management and professional aeronautics disciplines. We sincerely appreciate the leadership of Dr. Viltz and Maggie Drake in bringing this important relationship to fruition.”
