Political analyst/author to speak at AVC in midst of presidential campaign

One of America’s foremost political analysts, Theodore J. Lowi, is scheduled to speak at Antelope Valley College 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 in the Board Room, SSV 151, 3041 W. Ave. K, Lancaster.

Lowi, the John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions at Cornell University, will discuss the 2008 presidential campaign and election. Admission is free to the event, which is sponsored by W.W. Norton and Company publishers, AVC’s Department of Political Science, and Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

A question and answer session will follow Lowi’s presentation.

Lowi’s visit will occur the same month as the crucial California primary and primary elections in more than 20 other states – a significant step toward the White House for Democratic and Republican presidential contenders.

The 76-year-old analyst and author earned a doctorate in political science from Yale University. His books include “The End of Liberalism: The Second Republic of the United States,” a critical analysis of interest group politics in the United States, and “The End of the Republican Era.”

Lowi has co-authored numerous textbooks as well. His introductory textbook, “We the People: An Introduction to American Politics,” is one of the most widely used in American government classrooms throughout the United States, according to AVC political science instructor John Vento.

He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1972. He has served as president of the American Political Science Association, the Policy Studies Organization and the International Political Science Association.
