AVC graduate Stephen Stigler is one of 51 community college students
nationally selected for the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer
Scholarship Program, representatives of the Cooke Foundation announced
today.
Stigler is in line to receive up to $30,000 each year for up to three
years while he attends the University of California, Los Angeles
beginning in several weeks. The scholarship is believed to be the
nation’s richest such award for community college transfer students.
Although they comprise 45 percent of all undergraduates, students at
two-year colleges are often overlooked. Few funds are available to
help top-performing community college graduates transfer to four-year
institutions despite their high levels of ability and financial need.
Less than one of every 1,000 students at the nation's most selective
private institutions is a community college transfer.
"For many low-income, motivated students, community college is an
essential part of their plan to eventually obtain a bachelor's degree,"
said Dr. Matthew Quinn, the foundation’s executive director. "Our 2007
undergraduate transfer scholars share the ability and willingness to
prevail over many limitations, including pressing financial need.
We're pleased to help them realize the next step in their educational
development."
