Assessment Center: Ability-to-Benefit (ATB) Test

What is the Ability-to-Benefit Test?

Antelope Valley College administers the COMPASS Ability to Benefit (ATB) test to students applying for financial aid without having earned a high school diploma or the equivalent. As per U.S. Department of Education regulations, to satisfy the COMPASS ATB testing requirement, students must achieve or exceed the minimum passing scores on all three sections of the test in a single testing experience. The minimum passing scores are as follows:

  • Reading (62)
  • Writing Skills (32)
  • Numerical Skills/PreAlgebra (25)

How Do I Prepare for the ATB Test?

Students are strongly encouraged to prepare for each section of the COMPASS ATB test. The Study Materials for the regular reading, writing and math* assessment test provide many sample questions, tutorials and other helpful resources. The math division also offers PreAssessment Workshops (PAWs) on a walk-in basis. Check the PAWs flyer for current schedule and location.

*Special Note: Numerical Skills/PreAlgebra is the only level of math required for the COMPASS ATB test.

When Can I Take the ATB Test?

The ATB test is offered on a limited basis by appointment only. To make an appointment, call the Assessment Center at (661) 722-6300, ext. 6536.

What Happens if I Don't Pass the ATB Test?

Students have one opportunity to take and pass the ATB test. If this doesn't work out, students may consider the following options or alternatives:

1) Completion of 6 college degree-applicable semester credits- the courses must have academic rigor and cannot be performance based such as Physical Education, Art/Crafts or Musical Instruments, etc. Check with the Financial Aid Office for more information about the ATB 6-unit rule.

2) Complete a High School Diploma - The Antelope Valley Adult School may be able to assist students with completing their high school credits towards receiving a diploma. The A.V. Adult School can be reached by phone at (661) 942-3042.

3) Obtain a GED. The A.V. Adult School serves as the official GED Testing Center in the Antelope Valley. They also provide GED test preparation services. The A.V. Adult School is located at 45110 North 3rd Street East, Lancaster, California. Phone: (661) 942-3042.

4) Students may submit an appeal letter to the Dean of Counseling and Matriculation to retake the ATB test. The appeal must include evidence of completing instructional intervention in the areas of the ATB test that were not passed (e.g., completing courses in reading, English and math). Appeals without this documentation are automatically denied.

Note that ATB tests are approved and regulated by the U.S. Department of Education. Rules are subject to change.

The latest ATB regulations set forth by the U.S. Department of Education in the Federal Register, dated October 29, 2010, may be found at:
