Services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
Sign language interpreters, notetakers and real-time captioning services are available for qualified students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. DSS can also arrange to have videotapes and DVDs captioned.
Students will need to meet with DSS staff well before the beginning of each semester for assistance with course selection and registration. Student schedule information is necessary to arrange interpreting and/or real-time captioning services. Students are required to sign and comply with AVC's "Student Contract For Interpreting Services".
Because the demand for skilled service providers is very high, DSS requires a minimum of three days prior notice for any interpreter or real-time captioning requests. To request an interpreter, a student is responsible to visit the DSS Office and complete a blue "Request For Interpreting Services" form. It is also possible to access the form online and print a copy. The form must be submitted to DSS staff as far in advance as possible so that a qualified interpreter may be located and scheduled.
