Library: Services

Reference

The Reference Collection is located on the first floor of the Library. It includes materials such as general and specialized subject encyclopedias, handbooks, almanacs, indexes, dictionaries and atlases.

The Reference Desk is also on the first floor and is staffed during hours of operation by faculty librarians.

AVC librarians have a Bachelor's degree (can be in any discipline) and a Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science degree in the discipline of Library and Information Science. Some reference librarians have a second Master's or additional coursework in another discipline as well. Librarians are members of the AVC Faculty and may hold academic rank (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor).

Circulation

Loan Period

2 weeks with one 2 week renewal. 

Renewing books by telephone:

  • Please call 661.722.6300, extension 6533 to renew materials.  Please have your AVC ID card available when you call.

Phone renewal for library materials is available during the following hours: 

  • Monday-Thursday 8 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
    Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.

You may also renew books online

  • You will need your ID number located on your ID card below the bar code. Enter this code when asked for "Borrower ID".

Borrowing Limits

A maximum of 16 books and 20 pamphlets may be borrowed at any one time.

Please present a validated AVC ID card to check out materials.

Reserve

Reserve items are located at the Circulation Desk.  A validated AVC ID card is required to view reserve materials.

Validating Your AVC ID Card

Your AVC ID card, when validated, can be used to check out library materials. AVC ID cards must be validated each semester.  Please see Circulation desk for more information.

Book Drop

A book drop is located in the library foyer.

Faculty

Faculty members may check out books for the entire semester. Faculty are limited to sixteen books at any one time. Reference books may be checked out for 24 hours with permission of a Librarian, with a two book maximum. A validated AVC ID card is required to check out books.

Collection Development

Collection Development is the process by which a library adds books and other instructional materials to its collection.  

Faculty librarians at AVC select materials based on the Library Collection Development Policy.

All members of the academic community are invited to suggest materials for purchase.  To suggest a book or other item, please contact the Collection Development Librarian in your subject area.  See the guidelines on donating books to the library.

Copy Services

Photocopy Machines

Photocopy machines are located on both floors of the library. The machines will accept coins, paper bills, and copy cards purchased in the library. Photocopies are $.15 a copy.

Microfiche Reader-Printers

Microfiche Reader-Printers are available on the first floor of the library. The machines will only accept copy cards purchased in the library. No coins or paper bills may be used in these machines. Copies are $.15 each.

Network Printer

A networked printer is available for printing copies from the Horizon Public Access Catalog, electronic journal databases, and the Internet. This printer will only accept copy cards purchased in the library. Copies are $.15 each.

Copy Cards

Copy cards are available for purchase in the first floor copy room in the library. Initial purchase price is $1.00. (The first $.50 pays for the card, the remaining $.50 is for printing.) The card is reusable. Additional money may be placed on the card at any time by reinserting the card in the dispenser and following the directions provided.

Please note: The Circulation Desk does not provide change for library printing services. There is a change machine available outside the main copy room on the first floor.

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17 U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. The person using this equipment is liable for any infringement.

Interlibrary Loans

The Antelope Valley College Library will process requests for interlibrary loans (borrowing materials from other libraries) for Administrators, full time faculty, part-time faculty (must be teaching for the current semester), staff, and students enrolled for the current semester, following the procedures outlined below:

Borrower will provide complete bibliographic information for the item (s) requested. Incomplete requests will not be filled.

In order to borrow material: Students must be enrolled for the current semester and show an AVC student ID card; Administrators, faculty, and staff need to show an AVC staff ID card. Adjunct faculty must be teaching for the current semester to make a request and show their staff ID card.

Community Borrowers are not eligible for interlibrary loan.

If there is a charge from the lending library, borrower will be notified. Material will be requested upon borrower approval.

The AVC Library will identify a lender and request material.

The AVC Library will notify borrower if material is not available.

The AVC Library will notify borrower when material is received.

Borrower will return material to the AVC Library on or before the date due stated by the AVC Library. Overdue materials will jeopardize future interlibrary loan privileges. There is a .30 fine per day per book. Materials ordered and not picked up will result in a loss of interlibrary loan privileges.

Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under Certain Conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use”, that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

Faculty Services

Reserve

Instructors may place class-related materials on reserve for students at the Circulation Desk. Please allow a three-day processing period before referring students to these materials.

Instructors may place special class materials on Reserve at the Circulation Desk in the Library. These materials are for library use only. A current AVC ID card is required to check out Reserve materials from the Circulation Desk. When requesting Reserve items please give:

  • Class title
  • Instructor's name
  • Title of the book or other Reserve item

A Special Note on Textbooks

The Library has a number of class textbooks on reserve. Please inquire at the Circulation Desk to determine whether a particular textbook is on Reserve. Occasionally a title will appear in the collection as the result of a gift or other acquisition. Please check the Online Book Catalog for information on the availability of a particular text.

Loan Privileges

Antelope Valley College faculty are issued an Employee ID card which also serves as the faculty member's library card.   Faculty should bring their AVC Employee ID card to the Circulation Desk and Circulation staff will activate it.  The card must be updated at the Circulation Desk at the beginning of each semester of employment at AVC.

Faculty/Staff Reading Room

The Faculty/Staff Reading Room is available to faculty and staff during library operating hours. This room may also be used for prearranged meetings or other events. The room is equipped with two PC workstations, a printer and a telephone for outgoing calls only. Students are not allowed in this room.

Inter-library Loans

Interlibrary loan services are available most of the year. Book interlibrary loans are free; journal articles are subject to a fee. There is a limit of five requests at any one time. Please allow at least two weeks for delivery. To arrange for an interlibrary loan, please come to the Research Assistance Desk and contact a Librarian or fill out a book loan request or periodical/journal loan request online. A current AVC Employee ID card is required.

Research Methods Workshops and Class Visits

Term Paper Clinics in specialized subject areas are offered every semester by faculty librarians.  Class visits to the library may be arranged by appointment during regular library hours.

Periodical, Statistical & Other Databases

Electronic databases are currently available on a campus-wide basis. Faculty may access these databases via their office computers at any time. 

Recommending Books for the Library Collections

Instructors are encouraged to recommend books for the library collections.  To recommend or request the purchase of a book, please contact the Collection Development Librarian in your subject area.

Students with Disabilities

Adaptive computer equipment is available for use by studenst with disabilities in the reference area of the library. Please contact the Office for Students with Disabilities office for more information.

Group Study Rooms

The AVC Library has 10 group study rooms for student use:

  • four small rooms for groups of 2-3 students
  • six large rooms for groups of 4-8 students

Rooms are for study purposes only.   Recreational use is prohibited.

Other Resources

Pamphlet File

The Pamphlet File is located under the stairs, on the first floor of the Library.  It is organized in alphabetical order and uses the same Library of Congress Subject Headings as the catalog. 

When searching the catalog, your search results may display a "Pamphlet File" entry, indicating that there might be pamphlets on your topic.   Ask the Librarian at the Reference Desk for more information. 

To check out pamphlets take them to the circulation desk. You may check out 20 pamphlets per day.  There is a limit of five (5) pamphlets per subject.

The library holds around 150 non-electronic format journals, magazines and newspapers.  Subject and alphabetical lists of these periodicals are available in the library.

Print Format Periodicals

Maps

California topographic maps and physical/political maps of various countries and regions of the world are available in the reference area of the library.   Physical/political maps may be checked out.   Topographic maps are considered reference materials and do not leave the library.

Art Prints

Art prints are available on the main floor of the library.  Prints may be checked-out for two weeks, with one two week renewal, limit of four prints. There is a list of prints by artist and folio number in a notebook on the Map Cabinet next to the Art Prints rack.
