Other Options

The catalog offers you several other useful tools that you might find helpful as you conduct your research. 

If you have any questions about the options below, please consult a reference librarian.

Search History

If you have been searching for a number of different topics or doing a lot of different types of searches, you might find that you would like to re-do some of those searches.  The catalog has a feature that allows you to repeat or edit your searches.  

  • On the basic search page, click the History tab on the Basic Search menu bar.  The Search History page will appear.

  • If you wish to repeat a search, just click on the search words in the Search column.  The catalog will run this search again and display the results.

  • If you would like to change or add to your search, click on the Edit link in the far right column

The "Sort by:" Option

Another very useful feature of the catalog is its sorting option.  Once you have done a search for books on your topic, you may find that the list of results is quite long or not arranged in a way that is useful to you.  You may sort your search results by:

  • Author:  Sorts results in alphabetical order by author.

  • Media: Not currently available.

  • Publication Date:  Sorts results in date order, newest to oldest (oldest titles will be at the bottom of the list).

  • Title:  Sorts results in alphabetical order by title.

  • Collection: Sorts results into circulating, reference, reserve and oversize collections.

  • Library of Congress Call Number: Sorts results in call number order as they apppear on the shelves.

To sort your results:

  • Click on the down arrow in the Sort by: menu box.

  • Select a sort option, such as publication date (shown below), and click on the Arrow button.

  • Your results list will appear in order by date of publication.

Putting a Hold on a Book

If a book you would like to use is currently checked out, you may put a hold on the book.  When the book is returned, the library will notify you by phone and you may pick up the book at the Circulation Desk.

  • To put a hold on a book, click on the Request Item button that appears with each book on the Search Results page.

  • You may also request a book by clicking on the Request Item button in the lower right corner of the Full Record.

  • After you have clicked on the Request Item button, a new page will appear asking you to enter your Borrower ID number.  Your Borrower ID number is the same as your Student ID number.  (This number can be found on the front of your Student ID card below the bar code.) 

  • Please note that to protect your privacy, your login number will not appear in the login box.

  • Enter your Borrower ID number and follow the simple instructions to request the book. 

    Please note: Your Student ID serves as your library card.  You must activate/update your Student ID card each semester at the library Circulation Desk in order to check out library materials.

  • You will be notified by phone when the book is available.

My Account

Another useful feature of the catalog is the My Account tab on the Horizon Information Portal home page.  My Account allows you to see all of your ongoing transactions with the library, including:

  • Any books you might have checked out

  • Overdue fines

  • Holds

  • Blocks on your college records

To access your personal information, click on the My Account tab on the Information Portal home page.  Enter the six digit number from the front of your Student ID card into the Borrower ID text box and click the Login button.

Please note that to protect your privacy, your login number will not appear in the login box.

Overview

The first page you will see is the account overview showing:

  •  the books you have checked out

  • any books you may have on hold

  • blocks on your record due to overdue, lost or damaged books

Checked Out

  • To see details about the books you have checked out, click on the Checked Out link on the My Account menu bar.

  • The Items Out page will appear with a list of books that are currently checked out to you.

Holds

  • To see details about any books you have put on hold, click on the Holds link on the My Account menu bar.

  • The Hold Requests page will appear with a list of books that are currently on hold for you.  You will also see any books that are ready for you to pick up at the circulation desk.

A typical Hold Requests page can be seen below.   There are no hold requests or items for pick up shown in the example.

Fines/Blocks

  • To see details about any fines or blocks on your account, click on the Fines/Blocks link on the My Account menu bar.

  • The Blocks page will appear with a list of any blocks or fines you may have incurred.

Profile  

  • The Profile page, below, shows your personal information (name, address, phone) and the expiration date of the library card function of your Student ID card.   (Remember!  To be used as a library card, your Student ID card must be updated at the Circulation Desk every semester that you are a registered student.)

  • To see books you have checked out, click on the Items Out button.  To check for any blocks on your records click on the Blocks button.  To find out what holds you might have placed, click on the Holds button.

  • If you have any questions about the information on the Profile page, please go to the Circulation Desk and ask for help.

Renewing Books Online

You may now renew your books online.  

  • To renew a book online, click on the My Account tab on the Basic Search page.  The My Account tab will appear gray, as in the example below:

  • After you have clicked on the My Account tab, you will see the My Account menu bar. 

  •  Enter your Borrower ID in the text box provided and click on Login as shown in the example below.

  • Please note that to protect your privacy, your login number will not appear in the login box.

After you have clicked on the Login link, the Account Overview page will open.

  • Click on the Items Out link.  The Items Out page will open showing a detailed list of books that are checked out to you.
  • To renew a book, check the box next to the title you want to renew.

  • Click on the Renew button.

  • After you have clicked on the Renew button, a new Items Out page will open.  See example below.

  • In the far right column under Times Renewed you will see the number of times the book has been renewed.  In the example below, the book has been renewed one time.

  • The Due Date column will now show the new due date for the book.
