Important Information

Meet STAR Staff:

Linda Noteboom, Director

  • Welcome Linda Noteboom as Director of STAR Student Support Services program at AVC effective September 2007.   Watch for her introduction on the STAR SSS website in the coming days.

Walter Briggs III, Counselor

  • Hello, my name is Walter Briggs III.   Starting with the Fall 2006 semester I am your full-time TRIO/Student Support Services counselor.  I have been working at Antelope Valley College as an adjunct counselor for the past three years.  Prior to coming to Antelope Valley College I worked in the Antelope Valley Union high school district teaching ninth grade health, as well as doing some substitute teaching for a number of years.  I would like to invite all TRIO/SSS students to come visit me as often as you like, and I would like to encourage other eligible students to apply to the program. This is a great program that offers wonderful services to facilitate the acquisition of an associates degree and beyond for students committed to academic success and excellence. I look forward to seeing all STAR/TRIO students, and I'm excited about working with future STAR/TRIO students.

Sara Stanton, Clerical Assistant III

  • I am Sara Stanton and I began working with STAR in September 2005.  I have worked at Antelope Valley College since fall semester of 1998 in various departments of Student Services and hope that I can be a resource to students in the STAR program. I am excited to get to know the members of STAR and eager to learn the “ins and outs” of the day to day operations, while adding a piece of myself to this unique program.  As the youngest of eleven children and a first generation college student, I look forward to sharing my experiences with you and gaining insight from your experiences as well.

Susanna Jacobi, Student Peer Mentor

  • Introduction coming soon!

Obrikat, Karole, Student Peer Mentor

  • Hello, my name is Karole Obrikat and I arrived at AVC in the Spring of 2006 after retiring from a 20 year career as an esthetician (skin care specialist).  In my quest for higher education, I found a community of like minds, warm hearts and an abundance of choices to further my academic success as well as life experience.  My lifelong passion for literature was ignited as I found that I enjoyed writing as well as delving into my favorite topics. My goal is to return to AVC one day and teach English Literature and Composition via UC Berkeley.  I would like to return and give back what this community has selflessly given, and my being a STAR peer mentor is the first step in doing so.  I am a also a member of AVC's honors society, Alpha Iota,
and serve as its treasurer. My goal as a STAR peer mentor is to uphold the high standards of the program, to establish positive relationships and be of service to my academic community.

Fernando Ramirez , Student Peer Mentor

  • Hey what's up, my name is Fernando Ramirez and I am a peer mentor at the STAR program here at Antelope Valley College.  I am currently working towards my A.A. in Physical Education which I then plan to transfer to a four-year university then finish with my Masters along with my teaching credentials.  My desire has always been to be an aid to my friends, family and community by acquiring the essentials needed to live a healthy and full life.  Arriving at AVC in the spring of 2006, I remember feeling bewildered and out of place but with the help of STAR and its excellent tutors, I was able to find my voice and now I am able to give back what was given to me.  I am also a member of AVC's honor society and Alpha Iota; both of which I am excited to be a part of.  Well, enough about me, here are the classes I tutor: Spanish 101-102, English 95-101, Music 103 and History 107.  My aspiration as a peer mentor is to provide a service that can help students achieve their goals launching them to the next level of their educational goals.  Well that about covers it; don't be scared to greet me if you see me around campus, you can't miss me, believe me.
