Career Technical Education: Office Technology
Antelope Valley College provides an extensive office technology program designed to equip you with fundamental skills to work in a modern-day office. The program’s advisory committee is constantly updating instructors about what skills local employers are seeking in employees, which is then applied constructively in the classroom.
What certificates/degrees can I earn?
- Office support award: This award can be completed in one semester and provides minimum skills to someone seeking a receptionist or general office support position.
- Office specialist certificate
- Administrative assistant certificate
- Administrative medical assistant certificate
What will I learn?
This program offers a practical, down-to-earth approach to the latest computer technology and how it relates to today’s office demands. Skills taught range from basic bookkeeping and office procedures to the newest voice recognition technology, allowing students to transfer speech to text.
What kinds of classes are offered?
You can learn the basics of how an office and its equipment functions with Introduction to Microcomputers (CA 103), Spreadsheets for the Office (OT 121) or Bookkeeping (ACCT 111).
Once you’ve brushed up on the basics you also have the opportunity to take highly-skilled specialized classes such as Medical Office Procedures (OT 205), Beginning Medical Insurance (OT 152) or Legal Office Procedures I & II (OT 207-208). The program offers a multitude of courses spanning a wide range of office practices and procedures, preparing you to succeed in an office support position.
