1.  What, where and when is Commencement?

WHAT:  Commencement is the ceremony held at the end of each spring semester to recognize degree and certificate achievement.  All students who apply for graduation and are eligible are encouraged to participate in the ceremony.  Participation in the annual commencement ceremony does not indicate the completion of your degree or certificate.

WHERE:  Commencement 2018 will be held at the Brent Carter Marauder Stadium.

WHEN:  Commencement will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018.  Participants and guests should plan to arrive by 6:00 p.m.  The gates will be open at 6:00 p.m.

2.  Will there be another commencement ceremony for 2017-18?

No, this is the only commencement ceremony and it includes those who completed their graduation requirements in Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 or will complete them in Summer 2018.  The ceremony will be held rain (wind) or shine.

3.  Do I have to sign up to participate?  

You must apply for graduation online at www.avc.edu/studentservices/graduation.

4.  Is there a practice and do I have to go?

Yes, there is a video practice at 10:00 am and 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2018 in the Student Lounge in the Student Center building.  We highly recommend that you attend this practice session but you are not required to do so.

5.  Where do I buy my cap & gown and how much does it cost?

Caps & gowns will be available for purchase in the Marauder Bookstore the Monday after spring break which is April 9, 2018.  The purchase price is $27.95 plus tax.

6.  What other graduation-related items does the Marauder Bookstore carry?

Also available are maroon & silver tassels with a 2018 charm for $4.95 plus tax and maroon and silver announcements are $12.95 for a pack of five.

7.  What is the required GPA to wear a gold Honor's tassel?

A minimum GPA of 3.25 is required to wear the gold tassel.  The tassel can be purchased at the Marauder Bookstore for $4.95 plus tax.  Those students that have applied for graduation and qualify to purchase an honors tassel will have their name on a list in the Marauder Bookstore.  The list will not incluce those students with a privacy hold on their account.

8.  What is a privacy hold on my account?

When students register for admission to Antelope Valley College they have the option to have their information kept private.  If you qualify to have your name on the list for a gold tassel or want it printed in the program please go to Admissions and Records and have the privacy information lifted from your account.

9.  Where do I order a class ring, invitations, pictures, etc?

We will hold a Grad Finale on Thursday, April 12, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 pm in the Student Lounge in the Student Center building.

Academic Caps and Gown will be there for you to order rings, invitations, and souvenirs.

Ultimate Exposures will be taking graduation photos and they will provide the cap and gown for the pictures.Though walk-ins are accepted, please visit www.ultimateexposures.com to make an appointment for a sitting on Aprl 12, 2018.  An additional day may be scheduled.

10.  Am I allowed to bedazzle/decorate my cap?

Absolutely as long as it is nothing obscene or inappropriate.

11.  If I graduated last December, do I get a "2017" charm on my tassel?

No.  If you graduated in December 2017, it is still part of the 2017-18 school year and, as such, is a 2018 graduation.

12.  What are the Marauder Bookstore hours?

The bookstore is open 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 7:30 - 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

13.  Do I need tickets to go to the commencement?

No, not at this time.

14.  Can I reserve seats?

Seating is not assigned and is "first come, first served."  You cannot save seats.

15.  What if there are no seats available?

There is additional seating in the cafeteria with the commencement ceremony streaming live on the TV screens.

16.  Is parking free?

Yes, parking is free.  We will be using parking lots 1, 2, 3, and 5 which are accessible from Avenue K via Entrances A, B, C, and D.

17.  Can my family and friends bring coolers?

NO coolers are allowed into the stadium - no exceptions.  NO smoking, no drugs, and no alcohol allowed. 

18.  Will I receive my diploma at commencement?

No, you must pick up your diploma at the graduation office.  Diplomas for spring graduates will be available by the end of July 2018 and for summer graduates by the end of September 2018.

19.  How do I get more information?

 You will receive current updates through your AVC email by joining the commencement group page.  Sign in to myAVC.  Click the sites tab in the upper right corner. Click on Campus Organizations and Committees.  Click on Commencement Committee.  Join the Group.  You are now on the road to participating in the Commencement.

20.  If I need to take a class in Fall 2018 can I walk in the Commencement ceremony in June 2018?

No, students taking classes in Fall 2018, Spring 2019, or Summer 2019 will participate in the commencement ceremony in June 2019.
