Exploring STEM Careers: Dr. Michael Siegel

Antelope Valley native Michael Siegel wanted to be a veterinarian.

“I had pets throughout my childhood and a lifelong interest in science,” Siegel said. Veterinary medicine seemed like the perfect career choice to combine the two interests.

Siegel graduated from Littlerock High School and did undergraduate work at Cal Poly, Pomona where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science. From there he entered the College of Veterinary Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences, graduating in 2010 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).

 “It’s a great job, a great career,” said Siegel.

As a general provider of animal care, Siegel is involved in all aspects of treatment and diagnosis such as ultrasound, surgical intervention and regular health maintenance.

Siegel practices veterinary medicine at Antelope Valley Animal Hospital. Dr. Jim Nyholt, a partner in the firm, was an inspiration to Siegel growing up and the family veterinarian. As a student, Siegel worked in a research laboratory, the Phoenix Zoo and Hawaii. He volunteered for rural veterinary medicine, the Future Farmers of America and 4-H Club.

Siegel lives in Lancaster and is the son of Commissioner Eugene E. Siegel, an adjunct professor at AVC. He likes to travel the world and spend time with his dog, Lilly.  

He has advice for aspiring veterinarians: “Make sure you enjoy your science classes because you will use that knowledge when you get out.”
