How to Request Credit for Prior Learning
Options for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)
If you are an active service member or veteran, you may qualify for credit toward your program of study. If you attended a military service school, received training, or served in an occupation specialty, you may be able to earn credit toward your local degree or certificate Antelope Valley College.
To request credit for your military training: Contact the Veterans Counselor at AVC College.
Submit your official transcripts directly to the Admissions & Records Office at San Bernardino Valley College.
- Active-duty members of the armed forces can submit a Joint Services Transcript (JST). You may request your JST through the JSTwebsite.
- Military service members of the All Service Members submit an official transcript from _____________to receive traditional transfer credit. Note: CCAF is an accredited college, credit awards are considered as transfer credit, rather than credit for prior learning.
To submit your request for credit, you will need to ensure your official transcripts have been received by Antelope Valley College and submit the completed CPL Petition form to our MAP/CPL Counselor to initiate the review process.
Students who feel their knowledge of a subject is equivalent to the content of a course offered by the college may apply for credit-by-examination. A currently enrolled student may challenge a certain course offered by AVC for any of the following reasons:
- Satisfying prerequisites
- Improving grade point average (GPA)
- Meeting graduation unit requirements
- Obtaining course credit for equivalent experience or competency
- Students are not required to be registered for the course being challenged.
A portfolio is a collection of documents, supporting materials, and corresponding narrative that document student’s ability to demonstrate their proficiency in learning objectives for a single course.
Students interested in Credit for Prior Learning using a student-created portfolio shall receive credit as recommended by the appropriate department chair or faculty designee.
To request review of a student-created portfolio, please speak with a counselor.
To submit your request for credit, you will need to ensure completion of a portfolio that demonstrates proficiency in learning objectives for a single course listed in the Catalog at Antelope Valle College.
Earn credit towards your degree or certificate with a current, verifiable industry certification or licensure.
Students interested in Credit for Prior Learning using industry recognized credential(s) shall receive credit as recommended by the appropriate department chair or faculty designee.
To request a review of industry-recognized credentials:
- Submit your current, verifiable industry certification or licensure, a copy of your government issued photo identification and the completed CPL Petition form to initiate the review process.
- Please contact a counselor at AVC for more information.
Advanced Placement (AP) scores are also managed in the graduation office. If you have sent official AP scores to the college, contact the Graduation Office to verify and complete additional steps.
Request for Evaluation of Non-Traditional Work.
At AVC credit can be assessed for IB exams. Please refer to the table here for IB credit on the website above for correct IB credit equivalencies at AVC. Students who have earned credit from an IB exam should not take a comparable college course because transfer credit will not be granted for both. If you have sent official AP scores to the college, contact the graduation office to verify and complete additional steps.
At AVC credit can be assessed for CLEP. If you have sent official CLEP scores to the college, contact the graduation office to verify and complete additional steps.
