On-Campus Supervisors

As a student worker supervisor, you play a critical role in creating a positive and productive work environment for student employees. Supervisors are responsible for communicating department goals, providing clear job descriptions, organizing assignments, and establishing expectations for student workers.

Supervisors are also responsible for training, motivating, communicating with, guiding, evaluating, and supporting the students they hire. You should serve as a role model by demonstrating good work habits such as punctuality, dependability, cooperation, honesty, and efficiency.

A supervisor’s primary responsibility is to provide student employees with adequate guidance, training, and support. Supervisors are accountable for the work performed by their student workers. Many students bring strong potential but limited work experience; your patience and support help them develop professional skills and become valuable contributors to your department.

While it may not always be possible to establish a formal training program, good personnel practices require that every new student worker be oriented to the workplace and trained to perform the duties required of their position.

How Do I Get Started?

Antelope Valley College now uses Handshake as its official platform for posting on-campus student employment opportunities and connecting departments with AVC students.

Handshake has officially launched and is actively being implemented across campus. During this initial rollout phase, departments are onboarding, learning the platform, and beginning to post student worker positions.

Departments wishing to hire student workers should continue coordinating with the Job Placement Center (JPC) for support with hiring, onboarding procedures, and Handshake setup.

Job Placement Center Contact Information:

Using Handshake as a Supervisor

Handshake serves as AVC’s centralized system for student employment and recruitment. Through Handshake, supervisors and departments can:

  • Post on-campus student worker jobs

  • Review student applications and resumes

  • Register for on-campus job fairs and hiring events

  • Build ongoing recruiting relationships with AVC programs

As the platform continues to expand, additional features and guidance will be shared to support departments in using Handshake effectively.

How Do I Find Job-Ready Students?

As Handshake continues to roll out, departments may use a combination of Handshake postings and Job Placement Center support to identify candidates.

The Job Placement Center maintains a list of students who:

  • Have completed all onboarding requirements

  • Are eligible for hire

  • Are actively seeking on-campus employment

Please contact the Job Placement Center if you need assistance identifying job-ready students during this rollout period.

Hire Date vs. Start Date

Hire Date:
The hire date is the date the student has been interviewed, offered the position, and has accepted the job offer.

Start Date:
The start date is the date the EPAF has been submitted and approved by the Job Placement Center.

Please check your EPAF originator queue regularly to monitor the status of submitted EPAFs.

What Funding Do I Use?

This section is currently under review and will be updated as additional guidance becomes available.

How Do I Know How Much Federal Work-Study (FWS) Funding My Student Has?

After submitting a Federal Work-Study Employment Authorization form to Financial Aid for a student you wish to hire, Financial Aid will return the form with the student’s total FWS award for the academic year.

If you do not receive a response, please contact the Financial Aid Office to check the status of your submission.

Important Note:
Federal Work-Study funds are limited. Supervisors are responsible for tracking student work hours to ensure the award amount is not exceeded. If a student exceeds their awarded FWS funds, the department will be responsible for identifying alternative funding to continue paying the student.

When Can My New Hire Start Working?

All potential student hires must complete all Job Placement Center onboarding requirements, including Canvas training and Live Scan clearance through Human Resources, before an EPAF can be submitted.

Once onboarding is complete, the Job Placement Center will notify you by email that the student is eligible for hire.

At that point, you may submit an EPAF. The EPAF must be approved by the Job Placement Center before the student can officially begin working. Please monitor your originator queue regularly for approval status.
