Disability in Higher Education Discussion Panel
Join us for the Disability in Higher Education Panel on Wednesday, October 1.
This engaging event kicks off Disability Awareness Month with an open and thought-provoking conversation featuring students, faculty, and staff with disabilities. Panelists will share their personal experiences navigating higher education, shedding light on both the challenges that remain and the valuable perspectives and contributions disabled individuals bring to our campus community.

"Ask Me Anything" Table Event
Ask Me Anything is an opportunity for any student, disabled or not, to seek information about what opportunities and resources the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) has to offer disabled students. This event will offer answers to specific questions, and guidance for any disabled student looking to get information on how our department can assist them.

High-Tech /Alternative Media Display
This display will allow AVC students to see certain equipment that is offered by our department such as: K3000 Textbook reader, Talking stethoscopes, Visio Desk enlargers, braille printing, and more! We will have staff on hand to answer any questions about our equipment and services.

Deaf Student Panel
This panel will explore what it means to live, learn, and work as a Deaf or Hard of Hearing student in a college setting—highlighting both the barriers that persist, and the meaningful contributions those Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals make to our campus community.

The Social Construction of Disability: Villain, Victim, or Superhero?
Why does Hollywood love to make disabled characters into villains or superheroes? And what does that say about how we see disability in real life? This fast-paced, eye-opening workshop dives into the hidden ways our culture “constructs” disability—through stereotypes, social rules, and unspoken ideas of “normal.” Along the way, we’ll unpack ableism and audism, laugh at some ridiculous media portrayals, and learn how to flip the script. Bring your curiosity, your questions, and maybe a friend—this one will stick with you.
