Drafting is the drawing or designing of an entity to be manufactured, produced or constructed, such as machines or buildings.
Computer Aided Design (CAD) is the digital manipulation of the drafting process in two- and three-dimensions. Antelope Valley College’s drafting and computer aided design program utilizes state-of-the-art computers, printers and plotters, as well as industry standard software such as AutoCAD.
What certificates/degrees can I earn?
- Drafting/computer aided design certificate
- Associate in Science degree in drafting/computer aided design
What will I learn?
You will learn how to draw two- and three-dimensional diagrams and plans, using both conventional materials and computer software. This allows you to take mechanical drafting techniques and blueprints and interface them with the capabilities of a computer to design and produce plans that can be easily modified and further developed without starting over. You will learn engineering principles, use of traditional and digital instruments, construction methods, applied geometry and pictorial drawing.
What kinds of classes are offered?
The course schedule offered for the drafting certificate and associate degree are a blend of drafting, electronics and engineering classes designed to give you working knowledge of the mechanical, architectural, electronic and aerospace fields of engineering as it relates to the industry and transfer through AVC’s Engineering Program.
What are possible jobs in this field?
Today’s technological society relies on the skills and abilities of talented computer aided design drafters to solve problems, develop new products and redesign outdated schematics. It is possible to be hired solely as a computer aided design drafter. However, since this program is not a transfer major, many students enter the engineering program, which relies heavily on the computer aided drafting skills you can learn in this program.
Who could hire me?
Drafting personnel can find jobs in any field where products or structures are being manufactured. Locally, this ranges from assistants to city civil engineers to aerospace drafting jobs with companies such as the Lockheed Martin Corporation.
What’s the average pay range for local jobs in this field?
Pay ranges widely, depending on employer and experience.
