Internship Opportunity: Senator Scott Wilk This twelve-week program is designed to provide interns with a firsthand look at the inner workings of a legislative office and with opportunities to fully participate in much of the work our office does.
  • The main focus areas for our program are:

Administration: Interns will perform all of the administrative duties that come with working in a professional setting. No matter the career path chosen, this internship's professional office experience will enhance any application for a professional job. Interns will learn basic administrative skills (answering phones, email, etc.) and the crucial skills of organization, customer service, calendaring, and Microsoft Office proficiency.

Field Work: Interns will be assigned a Field Representative Mentor and will join their mentor as they do field work. This may include presenting certificates of recognition, attending meetings, community events, grand openings, or other opportunities where they will represent the Senator in the community. Interns will learn public speaking, networking, presenting, and collaboration.

Casework: Interns will assist in casework, which is the most significant direct impact a legislative office can have on an individual constituent. They will process constituent inquiries through the official Legislative Constituent Management System (for which they will have their own personal login) and generate official correspondence. Interns will develop extensive database management skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.

Legislative Analysis: Interns will research and analyze past and current legislation and generate evaluative reports. Throughout the program, interns will draft their own bill, which they will submit to the Legislative Director for review and consideration. They will learn advanced report writing and develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills.

Professional Development: Over the course of the program, interns will perform a number of projects designed to promote their overall professional development and assist them in their future careers. Interns will acquire resume writing and interview skills, as well as learn professionalism, time management, adaptability, prioritization, and teamwork.

Our internship program is designed to be a well-rounded experience, combining excellent opportunities with practical career development. Interns from our program have held a myriad of positions in both the Senate and the Assembly, as schedulers, field reps, legislative aides, and even legislative directors. Outside of the legislature, our office interns have gone on to work as college office administrators and communication directors, and many have found success in campaigns as campaign coordinators and even campaign managers. Please forward this email to your students. We look forward to hearing from you to schedule a time to present this internship to your classes in the coming weeks!

  • Our Timeline:
  • Applications are due Sunday, April 28th at 11:59 pm.
  • The First Round of interviews will be held the week of May 6th.
  • The Second Round of interviews will be held the week of May 13th.
  • Internship awards will go out on Friday, May 24th by phone call and email.
  • Our Twelve-week Internship Program will start on June 10th and run through August 30th, completing 225 hours throughout the internship.
The application can be found by going directly to our senate website at https://sr21.senate.ca.gov/district-internship-program
