California Community Colleges to Implement Common Course Numbering

Starting Fall 2025, all California Community Colleges will use the same course numbers for similar classes across different colleges through a new system called Common Course Numbering (CCN).

Certain course names will change to be aligned with the same title, number, and description at all California Community Colleges. This change will make your college experience smoother and more efficient. The CCN updates will take effect during the registration process.

By July 2027, all Community Colleges in California will have fully adopted CCN.

| What is Common Course Numbering?

Common Course Numbering means that if a class is the same at two colleges, it will have the same name and number no matter which college is offering it.

This helps you:

  • Transfer more easily to a four-year university
  • Save time and money by not retaking the same class
  • Plan your degree with clearer course options
  • Take classes at different colleges without getting confused
  • Make smart choices about your education

For example: MATH 115 (Statistics) at AVC will become STAT C1000: Introduction to Statistics across all California community colleges.

  • ENGL 101 College Reading and Composition will change to:
    ENGLC1000 Academic Reading and Writing

CCN helps you by making transfers easier, allowing you to easily see which courses transfer to four-year universities. It saves you time and money by helping you avoid retaking classes or losing credits during the transfer process.

With clearer academic plans, you’ll know exactly which courses you need for your degree, and by seeing course equivalents across colleges, you can make smarter choices. Additionally, CCN provides more flexibility, enabling you to take classes at different colleges without confusion.

FAQ – AB 1111 & Common Course Numbering (CCN)

California community colleges are adopting a Common Course Numbering (CCN) system to make it easier for students to transfer between colleges and to the CSU and UC systems. The changes ensure consistency across the state.

No—your course content, units, and transferability remain the same. Only the number and/or title may look different in the catalog or schedule.

Your transcript will show the new course number, but universities and colleges are being informed of the changes and will honor them just like the previous ones.

You will still receive full credit. The old and new course numbers are equivalent. They will not count twice, nor will you lose credit.

We’ve created a course crosswalk chart comparing old and new numbers. You can find it on our website or ask a counselor for a copy.

Your academic counselor is here to help. You can also visit the Admissions and Records Office or check our website for more information.

Not at all. Everything still counts toward your degree and financial aid eligibility, just under a new course number.
