NEXTUP Program and Eligibility

Real Opportunities for Current & Former Foster Youth

NextUp is here to support you on your college journey. If you are a current or former foster youth attending a California community college, you may be eligible for expanded services, financial support, and personalized guidance to help you succeed.

Expanded Eligibility – You May Qualify If You:

  • Were in foster care (in any state) for at least one day on or after your 13th birthday
  • Are enrolled in or planning to enroll in at least 9 units (or working toward that goal through an education plan)
  • Are 26 years old or younger when first enrolling in NextUp
  • (Students who enroll before turning 26 may continue beyond age 26)
  • Previously enrolled before 26, left, and returned after turning 26 (you may be readmitted!)
  • Are dual enrolled or out-of-state foster youth

What NextUp Provides

Support may include:

  • Book & supply grants
  • Laptop support
  • Transportation assistance
  • Emergency food support
  • Housing referrals & support
  • Unmet need grants
  • Priority registration
  • Tutoring & academic advising
  • Personal, academic & transfer counseling
  • Career & professional development workshops
  • Community-building events & celebrations
  • Personalized support (calls & texts, not just emails!)


You'll also receive guidance with:

  • Chafee Grant (up to $5,000 per year)
  • Cal Grant B Foster Youth Award (up to 8 years eligibility)
  • Financial aid application assistance
