Antelope Valley College will host a new installment of a biology lecture series on Friday, March 13, exploring how biological concepts are often misunderstood or misrepresented in pop culture and political discussions.
The presentation, titled “Biological Mythbusters: Misusing Biology in Popular Culture and Politics,” will be led by AVC biology instructors Joshua Shipp and Lena Coleman. The series examines cases where biological and evolutionary principles are misunderstood or misrepresented in media, literature, and public discourse.
During the talk, Shipp and Coleman will explore common claims that attempt to use biology to justify social or political viewpoints and how those ideas often differ from established scientific research.
Topics will include widely debated concepts such as “alpha males,” gender, human biological diversity, and popular accounts of nature and natural selection. The presentation aims to provide a scientific perspective on these issues while encouraging critical thinking about how biology is used in public conversations.
The event is open to students, faculty, staff, and community members interested in science, culture, and the intersection of biology with social topics.
When: Friday, March 13 from 4–6 p.m.
Where: Uhazy Hall 201 & Zoom
