Civic Engagement is when someone works to make a difference in their community. This can be both political and non-political. Some examples of civic engagement are:

Upcoming Elections 

- General Municipal Election - April 14, 2026 (Local city elections)

  • The last day to register to vote for the March 30, 2026, General Municipal Election is April 14, 2026.

  • Period to Accept Write-In Candidates February 16, 2026 - March 31, 2026.

  • Vote-by-mail ballots can be returned by mail, at a drop-off location, or your county elections office.

  • Vote centers open for early in-person voting in all Voter’s Choice Act counties beginning on March 16, 2026.

  • Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by April 14, 2026.

- California Primary - June 2, 2026 (Mid Term Candidate vote)

  • The last day to register to vote for the May 18, 2026, Primary Election is June 2, 2026.

  • All California active registered voters will receive a vote-by-mail ballot for the June 2, 2026, Primary Election.

  • Your county elections office will begin mailing ballots by May 4, 2026.

  • Ballot drop-off locations open on May 5, 2026.

  • Vote-by-mail ballots can be returned by mail, at a drop-off location, or your county elections office.

  • Vote centers open for early in-person voting in all Voter’s Choice Act counties beginning on May 23, 2026.

  • Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by June 9, 2026.

Register to Vote

Qualifications to Register to Vote

To register to vote in California, you must be:

  • A United States citizen and resident of California

  • 18 years old or older on election Day

  • Not currently serving a state or federal prison term for the conviction of a felony

  • Not currently found mentally incompetent to vote by a court

 

Qualifications to Pre-register to Vote

To pre-register to vote in California, you must:

  • Be 16 or 17 years old

  • Meet all of the other eligibility requirements to vote

You will automatically be registered to vote on your 18th birthday. 

 

Conditional Voter Registration - Same Day Voter Registration

If you did not register to vote by the 15-day voter registration deadline, in most elections, you may conditionally register to vote and cast a provisional ballot by visiting your county elections office, a vote center, or a designated satellite location during the period of 14 days prior to, and including, Election Day.
