Language & Communication Arts: English as a Second Language (ESL)
Non-native English speakers can improve their English speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills through the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Courses range from beginning to advanced levels and include writing instruction, which dovetails with regular composition classes.
Noncredit ESL
Noncredit ESL provides a pathway for students who are interested in English for job preparation. It can also support students who plan to continue their education by strengthening their English skills and then transitioning into credit courses that lead to a degree or university transfer. Additionally, these classes can help students who want to prepare for the citizenship test.
The classes are flexible because of the nature of the program. ESL courses are open entry/open exit during the semester with the approval of the instructor as long as there is space in the class. There is no limit to how many times students can repeat noncredit ESL courses, and no letter grades are used. A pass or no pass grade is given. Noncredit courses do not transfer to another school.
Students are encouraged to take the Guided Self-Placement Survey on this page to see which level of courses they are ready for. Academic counselors can provide further assistance.
AVC's noncredit ESL classes are tuition free. However, students may be asked to pay for textbooks, materials, and supplies that are suggested for student success. Financial aid is not available for noncredit courses, books, or supplies.
There are two ESL certificates offered. The first one is a High Intermediate (Level 4) and the second one is an Advanced (Level 5) certificate.

Inglés como Segundo Idioma sin crédito (Noncredit ESL)
AVC ofrece Inglés como Segundo Idioma sin crédito (ESL). Los estudiantes pueden centrarse en habilidades tales como la gramática, el vocabulario, y la lectura o la escritura a medida que progresan a través del programa sin crédito. ESL sin crédito proporciona una vía para que los estudiantes que estén interesados en Inglés para la preparación del trabajo. También puede apoyar a quienes planean continuar su educación, fortaleciendo sus habilidades en inglés y luego haciendo la transición a cursos con crédito que conduzcan a un título o transferencia universitaria. Además, estas clases pueden ayudar a los estudiantes que desean prepararse para el examen de ciudadanía.

Las clases de ESL sin crédito son gratuitas. Sin embargo, a los estudiantes se les puede pedir a pagar por los libros de texto, materiales, y suministros que se sugieren para el éxito estudiantil. La ayuda financiera no está disponible para cursos sin crédito, libros, o suministros.
Estudiantes pueden obtener dos certificados de ESL. Hay un certificado de nivel intermedio alto (Nivel 4) y otro de nivel avanzado (Nivel 5).
