What is Wildland Fire Academy?
Wildland Fire Academy is 240 hours of classroom and outdoor skills classes that will give you a jump start for positions as a Wildland Firefighter. Top performing students may be asked to join the Antelope Valley College Wildland Fire Handcrew. The Wildland Fire Academy will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to obtain an entry-level position as a temporary, on-call wildland firefighter. Upon successful completion of the academy, the National Wildfire Coordinating Group will award you a certificate. Approximately half of your training will be in the classroom and half in practical training application.
How do I get into the academy?
You must attend one of the Wildland Firefighter Academy information/orientation sessions, and complete an application and medical examination.
To be a candidate, you must be a high school graduate or have a GED, and you must be 18 years old before the program begins.

The fire technology field offers you many employment options, including a job as a forestry technician, wildland firefighter, hot shot crew member, helitack crew member, fire prevention technician, industrial fire brigade, health and safety inspector or Type II hand crew member.
