Student leaders from Antelope Valley College’s Associated Student Organization (ASO) recently met with Congressman George Whitesides to discuss issues affecting community college students and the future of higher education.
During the meeting, ASO representatives shared concerns and ideas related to artificial intelligence, expanding research opportunities for students and recent funding cuts affecting Hispanic-Serving Institutions such as AVC. Students also discussed the removal of remedial math courses designed to support student success and the impact of the Course Program of Study requirement on financial aid eligibility.
The conversation gave students the opportunity to raise real concerns from the campus community while learning more about the policy process and how federal decisions affect community colleges.
ASO leaders said the meeting also reinforced the importance of civic participation. Congressman Whitesides encouraged students to stay engaged in their communities and emphasized the role voting plays in shaping policies that affect students.
Following the discussion, ASO members plan to continue their civic engagement efforts by participating in voter outreach ahead of the upcoming Lancaster City Council election on April 14.
ASO leaders thanked Congressman Whitesides for taking the time to hear directly from students and for his continued support of community college education.
