Antelope Valley College's Fine Arts Department presents a faculty exhibition featuring new full-time faculty members Elizabeth Preger, photography, and Emily Sudd, ceramics. On view Sept. 29 through Oct. 30 at the Rich Sim Gallery, the exhibition introduces two artists who have joined AVC’s studio arts community and marks a new chapter in arts instruction at the college.
Preger creates immersive environments using photography, video, sculpture and sound. Her installation, Air transport, a study of its nature and possibilities, surrounds visitors with translucent photographic images of trees captured in Siberia and California—locations that reflect her family’s ancestry and immigration story. Suspended from the ceiling, the images shift with visitors’ movement, layering perspectives of landscape, ancestry, migration and memory.
Sudd’s ceramic works explore material transformation and resilience. Her recent Resilience series combines porcelain, stoneware and terracotta, intentionally exposing the materials to conditions that cause them to melt, bubble and transform. The resulting vessels appear frozen in a state of transition, with forms that seem to defy gravity and create a sense of instability and uncertainty.
The Storm works within the series were inspired by the collective experience of communities affected by the Eaton Fire and powerful windstorms across the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding areas. The pieces evoke the experience of weathering both the literal and metaphorical storms of life.
The AVC community and public are invited to experience the exhibition and meet the artists during a reception on Thursday, Oct. 15.
About the Artists
Elizabeth Preger
Preger creates large-scale, immersive environments using photography, video, sculpture and sound. Recorded interviews and oral histories are also integral to her practice, which explores relationships among nature, people, cultural history and resilience.
Preger earned a bachelor’s degree in art from UCLA and an MFA in Photography & Media from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Kathmandu Photo Gallery and Artery Post-Modern Gallery in Bangkok, as well as group exhibitions in the United States. Her work has also appeared in the Los Angeles Times and LA Weekly and has been featured by Photo L.A. and the Main Museum.
Emily Sudd
Sudd is a Los Angeles-based multimedia artist working primarily in ceramic sculpture. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at venues including the American Museum of Ceramic Art, Craft Contemporary, the Brand Library and Art Center and galleries throughout Los Angeles and beyond. She has presented solo exhibitions at the Weingart Gallery at Occidental College, LAM Gallery in Los Angeles and James Harris Gallery in Seattle.
Sudd earned an MFA from UCLA, an MA from California State University, Northridge, and a bachelor’s degree from UC San Diego. She is a full-time ceramics instructor at Antelope Valley College.
