Astronomy - ASTR

Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences and explores the physical and chemical laws that govern our solar system, the universe, and the natural world.

At AVC, astronomy courses help students build scientific understanding through observation, experimentation, and the study of Earth’s place in the cosmos. Coursework is designed to support general education and transfer preparation in the physical sciences.

Astronomy Courses

  • ASTR C1001 - Introduction to Astronomy
  • ASTR C1001H - Introduction to Astronomy - Honors
  • ASTR C1001L - Introduction to Astronomy Lab

What You Will Study

Students in astronomy study the structure and behavior of the universe, including planets, stars, galaxies, gravity, light, motion, and the physical processes that shape celestial systems.

Astronomy courses also help students strengthen scientific reasoning, observation, data interpretation, and laboratory skills that are valuable across many science and engineering pathways.

How Astronomy Is Taught

Lecture and Discussion

Students explore major concepts in astronomy through guided instruction, scientific explanation, and course discussions focused on the universe and its physical laws.

Laboratory Exploration

Lab activities provide hands-on opportunities for investigation, experimentation, and discovery related to Earth, space, and observable astronomical phenomena.

Technology-Enhanced Learning

Traditional instruction may be supported by computer-based tools, internet resources, and digital data acquisition and analysis as part of the learning experience.

Plan Your Path

Astronomy courses are a strong option for students completing general education, exploring the physical sciences, or preparing for transfer.

Students should review course options carefully and meet with a counselor to determine how astronomy courses fit into their educational plan.
